Menorca in September: warm sea, fewer people and the Gràcia festival

September is Menorca’s other great season: average highs of 26 °C, a sea that keeps the summer warmth and fewer people as the month goes on. The rain also returns, about 5 days and 61 mm on average, and it is the month with the most thunderstorms (AEMET, Menorca airport, 1981-2010). The summer access rules last until the 30th.

The sea in September

The water keeps the heat built up over the summer, so swimming is pleasant all month. After a storm or with the tramontana there can be waves and seagrass on the northern coves: on those days, choose the south.

With warm water and fewer boats at anchor, it is a good month for kayaking and snorkelling: the bay of Fornells is one of the best places to start. Which coves to choose depending on the wind, in north coast beaches.

The Gràcia festival in Maó

In early September Maó celebrates the festival of the Mare de Déu de Gràcia, its patron saint, with horses and riders in the streets of the centre. The harbour is lively for days: book a table for dinner.

Outside the festival, things to see in Mahón takes you from the market to the harbour in a day on foot.

Access and sunsets

Until 30 September Macarella is still car-free and Favàritx is reached on the L43 bus. At Punta Nati, however, the shuttle bus has stopped, as it only runs in July and August: you drive up for the sunset.

Punta Nati lighthouse has limited parking: arrive half an hour before sunset. All the dates are in summer access in Menorca.

Things to do in Menorca in September

Unspoilt coves without the August crowds, dinner at Ciutadella harbour or Cales Fonts without a wait and, at the end of the month, the first comfortable walks on the Camí de Cavalls.

For two, with coves at sunrise and dinners with a view, see Menorca as a couple.
