Menorca in October: weather, swimming and autumn things to do

October is a month of transition in Menorca: the average high is still around 23 °C and there are 183 hours of sunshine, but it rains more than in summer, about 7 days and 78 mm on average (AEMET, Menorca airport, 1981-2010). From 1 October you can park at Macarella again and the Favàritx road reopens to cars. It is a good month to walk and see the island without the heat.

Can you still swim?

Yes, especially in the first half of the month: the sea cools slowly and on sunny days swimming is pleasant in the sheltered southern coves. Fewer beach bars are open, so bring water and something to eat.

Cala Galdana has restaurants and facilities around the beach, unlike the unspoilt coves, and Son Bou has free parking all along the sand.

October without access restrictions

From 1 October Macarella has its car park again, a 15-minute walk from the cove, and the Favàritx road reopens to cars. It is the time to drive to places that in summer you can only reach by bus.

Combine Favàritx lighthouse with the s’Albufera des Grau nature park on the same day, and Cala Macarella with Macarelleta, a 10-minute walk away.

If it rains

The Museu de Menorca, the galleries of La Mola fortress, the Lithica quarries and the Mercat des Claustre in Maó are good plans for a rainy day. From November many coastal hotels and restaurants close.
