To see several coves and villages in a few days, hiring a car is the most practical option: the island is about 50 km end to end and the Me-1 road links Maó and Ciutadella in about 45 minutes. If you stay in a town and aren’t in a hurry, buses and footpaths cover much of the island, and in summer they are the only way to reach Macarella and Favàritx.
Car hire: the most flexible option
With a car you reach coves, lighthouses and villages at your own pace and can combine several areas in a day. Pick it up at the airport, or at the port if you arrive by ferry.
Before booking, compare the final price, not just the daily rate: insurance, excess, fuel policy and additional driver. In July and August demand is high: booking early is usually cheaper.
A small car is easier to park in the old towns and on the tracks to the coves.

The whole island in six days: Maó, the south-east, the north, the southern coves, Ciutadella and Macarella.
Summer access: Macarella, Favàritx and the southern coves
From 1 June to 30 September, Macarella can only be reached by bus from Ciutadella or on foot, and from mid-May to September the Favàritx road is closed to cars. Other car parks, such as Cala Turqueta’s, close when full.

Bus: between towns and to the beaches
The Maó–Ciutadella line runs every 30 minutes and stops in Alaior, Es Mercadal and Ferreries; there is also a non-stop Express Bus. In season, beach lines reach Es Grau, Son Bou, Cala Galdana, Cala en Porter, Binibèquer, Macarella and Turqueta.

Taxi
Radio Taxi Menorca answers on 971 367 111 (Maó, Sant Lluís and Es Castell) and 971 482 222 (Ciutadella and Ferreries). It’s the best way to get back at night or to link stages of the Camí de Cavalls.
On foot: the Camí de Cavalls
The Camí de Cavalls (GR 223) circles the whole island along the coast in about 185 km split into 20 stages; walking one or two is the best way to reach coves with no road.
Bring water, closed shoes and sun protection: many stretches have no shade or facilities. If you walk a one-way stage, plan how to get back to the start (bus, taxi or a second car). More on the Camí de Cavalls card.
