The Sant Joan festival in Ciutadella

On 23 and 24 June Ciutadella celebrates Sant Joan, its biggest festival, with horses and riders in the streets of the old town. The city fills up: book accommodation well ahead, or stay elsewhere on the island and come by bus.

If you miss the festival, June is a good month to see Ciutadella’s old town without the August heat: there is a full walk in things to see in Ciutadella.

Summer access rules from 1 June

From 1 June to 30 September no cars are allowed at Macarella: take the L69 bus from Ciutadella, with departures from 8:25, or walk. The Favàritx road, closed to cars since mid-May, is served by the L43 bus.

At Punta Nati the sunset shuttle bus runs only in July and August: in June you drive up. All the changes are in summer access in Menorca, and the lines in Menorca buses.

Which coves to see in June

It is the best time for the unspoilt southern coves, such as Turqueta, Macarella or Mitjana, before the car parks fill up first thing in July. Go in the morning and, if the tramontana is blowing, stay in the south.

To choose between the three, read Macarella, Turqueta or Mitjana; the rest are in the best beaches in Menorca.

Tips for June

Book your car and accommodation earlier than in May, especially for Sant Joan week, and make the most of the long days: the sunset at the Cova d’en Xoroi or Punta Nati lighthouse comes after an early dinner.

Where to watch the sunset in each area, in sunsets in Menorca. Sunset tickets for the Cova d’en Xoroi sell out: buy them a few days ahead.
